Gateway West
Reading, PAGateway West was one of the most complex but rewarding projects on which Delaware Valley Development Corporation (DVDC) has worked.
The 46 two- and three- bedroom townhomes are at a prime location in the City of Reading that was previously the home of an elevator factory. The site contained hazardous materials and is referred to as a brownfield property, land that is abandoned or underutilized due to pollution from industrial use. Due to this, Gateway West was an Act 2 environmental cleanup project. Community Lenders helped DVDC finance the project.
This is one of the best places I’ve lived. It’s a very homey atmosphere, inclusive, and welcoming. I hope they build more of these kinds of neighborhoods.
The opportunity to live somewhere like this with my income is amazing. People take pride in living here. Nothing compares; I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
It’s very peaceful and a great location – everything is close by. My neighbors are great; we all look after each other.
A primary benefit of redevelopment of designated brownfield sites is the demonstrated commitment of repurposing and sustaining previously developed land. Crews worked meticulously to remove the contaminants and hazardous materials, as well as navigating the jobsite. Surrounded by rowhomes and narrow streets, it was difficult to bring in excavation equipment, trucks, and deliveries to build the new community. However, DVDC was up to the challenge.
Now, families who are in need of affordable housing call Gateway West home. Luxury meets convenience with a spacious living area, dining room, fully-equipped kitchen, and ample closet space. Each home features a private entrance, an energy-efficient heating and cooling system, and many residents enjoy their own garage parking. The neighborhood includes 28 three-story interlocking townhomes, apartment style units, single home units, and two semi-detached units.
Gateway West’s community center houses the on-site management office, a meeting room, kitchen, and computer lab with internet service. Residents can utilize the laundry facility and request the 24-hour emergency maintenance service when needed.
Gateway West is within walking distance to many points of interest and is on the Barta Bus Route. To stock up on groceries, the Fine Fare Grocery Store is adjacent to the community. Families and children can also walk to Northwest Elementary School, Olivet Boys & Girls Club, Baer Park, the public library, and local shopping.
For those headed to work or school, Gateway West is a couple miles from the Reading Hospital & Medical Center, Reading Area Community College, and Albright College. Plus, Downtown Reading, with its festivals, restaurants, museums, and shops, is a convenient seven blocks away.
